Calavera means “skull” in Spanish but can also mean skeleton. It is the most iconic element during the traditional Day of the Dead festival. The festival is a celebration rather than a sad event and is a time for families to honour loved ones who have passed away. It is believed that during the days of the festival the gates of Heaven open to allow the spirits of deceased ancestors to reunite with their families.

The festival is famous around the world for the colourful and creative costumes and face paints. Skulls made of sugar and chocolate are also given as gifts to the dead, other common gifts for the dead are toys for children and tequila for adults.
